10th June 2022

In school this week

We have had a really fabulous start to the half-term and our 'Eco Day of Action' has been a great success. All the lessons today have been delivered without electricity - the classrooms have been a bit dark at times, but moving outside to continue learning there, has worked well. The children have been keen to tell us what we are and are not allowed to use. I have heard from other schools in Marlow who have joined in with the day and there have been some exciting activities going on across the town! There are some photos below of the things we have been getting up to. The children are certainly living up to the part of our school vision that focuses on 'being good citizens of the planet'.

Also, below is an article about transition and I encourage you to read it, so that you know what is coming up. This half-term is a particularly busy one for the teaching teams. Assessments to carry out, reports to write and transition activities to organise, as well as continuing the normal learning to plan and deliver. With all this going on, parents and carers should be aware that there may be some changes to staffing in classes. These changes are planned and temporary changes, using experienced teachers to deliver lessons planned by class teachers.

On Sunday, there will be some of our Year 1 children singing in the park as part of the Marlow Regatta festivities. Mrs Howarth and I will be there, and we would love to see our school families there to support the Year 1 children!

Transition

As we begin the last half term of this academic year (hasn't it flown by?), we thought that it would be good to share with you some of the plans that we have to help the children prepare for moving on. PSHE lessons focus on transition this half term and the children begin to learn that change can be a good thing and that moving on to another class or school is just part of their learning journey.

Class mixes

When the Reception children move to Year 1 in September, they will be in new class groups. We take this opportunity to mix children from Ants and Bees to create 2 new classes Butterflies and Ladybirds. This is to enable us to balance the classes using our in depth knowledge of the children, something that we didn't have last July. Reception children and their parents will find out which class they will be in on July 5th

The mix of children in Year 1 will not be changed for their move to Year 2

Year 2 children who are going to Holy Trinity Junior School will be mixed and put into 3 class groups ready for their move. Again we will use our in depth knowledge of the children to make as balanced a mix as possible. Holy Trinity will then add children from other schools starting with them in September to the 3 groups. Children and parents will find out their class on July 5th.

Transition activities

Next week, we start the first of our transition activities. On Tuesday and Thursday afternoons the Reception children will be visiting Year 1. They will spend time in each of the classes, so that they meet some of the Year 1 team and familiarise themselves with Year 1 learning environment. They will not be visiting their new class teachers or be in their new class groups but they will be visiting Year 1.

Also on Tuesday and Thursday afternoon, the children in Year 1 will visit Year 2. They will visit one class on Tuesday and the other on Thursday. Again, this is for the children to meet the Year 2 team and get used to the Year 2 classrooms which are very different to the Year 1 learning environment.

For the Year 2s, on Thursday afternoon, they will be playing sport on the Holy Trinity field with our teachers. They will continue with their 'normal' music and PE lessons  in school on Tuesday.

In addition to this, on both Tuesday and Thursday afternoons next week, we will also be welcoming some of our new Reception intake to spend some time in school.

Other transition activities

There are more activities planned over the coming weeks and there will be more detail in future newsletters. Below are a couple of dates and what they entail below:

Tuesday 22nd June: Those Year 2 children starting at Holy Trinity in September will visit the school with our teachers. They will get chance to meet some of the Year 3 team and ask questions.

Tuesday 5th July: Transition morning. This is when all children visit their new classes, find out who their new teacher(s) will be and spend some time preparing for their new start in September.

General News and Reminders

Junk Modelling

Year 1 would welcome donations of items for junk modelling - any packaging items welcomed but nothing that has contained nuts please.

Reminder about children in school with long term illness

As you may be aware, we have two pupils in school who have cancer and are requiring long term treatment which will be weakening their immune system. In order for us to help them remain as well as possible we will require your assistance.

Could you please inform us as soon as possible if your child becomes unwell with any infectious illness, such as a vomiting or diarrhoea bug, hand, foot and mouth, slap cheek, scarlet fever and especially chicken pox and measles as these could be very harmful.

This will enable us to contact the parents of the children in question to make them aware and to keep the child away from any infection risk, or to receive the treatment needed if a contact with an infection has been made.

Many thanks for your help
