Marlow Church of England Infant School

Taste of Democracy

Taste of Democracy week: 31st October - 3rd November

Today we had a visit from the Marlow Town Council, and they set up the hall as a polling station with real voting booths and ballot boxes. They explained that everyone in school would get the opportunity to cast their vote for their favourite sweet treat after campaigning all week. After answering 2 questions from the clerk, the children each took a ballot paper, made their choice and posted the paper into the ballot box.

Representatives from each year group were chosen to campaign on behalf of Chocolate Flapjack, Brownie, Millionaire Bite and Rocky Road. They made a campaign speech to each class to tell them the best thing about their chosen treat and why they should vote for it.

Once everyone had voted, the boxes were emptied and the ballots counted.

The results were:

  • Chocolate Flapjack - 21
  • Brownie - 37
  • Millionaire Bite - 35
  • Rocky Road - 72

So, Rocky Road was declared the winner! Next week every child will be given a Rocky Road to take home and enjoy.

We would like to thank Kathryn Joy and Marlow Town Council for helping us learn about democracy this week.
