12th March 2020

In school this week

Monday morning was delightful as we welcomed all our children and I am really pleased with how well they have settled back into the routine. They were thrilled to see their teachers and teaching assistants in person and of course, their friends.

The excitement levels have been high but the learning has proceeded and I have enjoyed walking around school, seeing the classrooms full and the children engaged in their learning. School as it should be - full of children!

School Worship has been happening remotely this week and will continue like this until at least the last week of term. I have recorded sessions to be played in the classrooms but each Friday, we plan to have a 'live' Celebration worship. Today was the first time we did this and it was wonderful to see all the children on the screen at once while I was sitting in my office. Mrs Beckett even admitted to feeling quite emotional when she overheard the children clapping and participating all together as a community.

Next Week's 'Learning at a Glance'

Home Learning

Home Learning returns as per our Home Learning Policy from today with new work set every Friday on Google Classroom for KS1 and Tapestry for Reception.

For KS1 there will be Maths, English and one item from the wider curriculum each week and for Year 2 there will be spellings which they will then work on the following week in school. Reception will have a topic related activity each week.

Report from RRSA

Next week we have a remote accreditation 'visit' to assess our application for Gold status as a Rights Respecting School. The RRSA Ambassadors have recorded their views on RRS and we would love to have some parent views as well. Thank you to everyone who has already completed the questionnaire sent out earlier in the week. It is not too late to give us your views - https://forms.gle/uTy93G34gBtaz9DE6

Library Days

With the children all back in school, we have made some small revisions to our Risk Assessment. One of these is a small change to library days and we can confirm that these are:

  • Monday - Year 1
  • Wednesday - Year 2
  • Friday - Reception

Library bags/books should be brought into school on these days only.

The Fox Project

Next Thursday the children in Reception will have a live video session with The Fox Project, an animal charity based in Tunbridge Wells. They will be learning more about foxes and their habitats and will hopefully get a chance to see some fox cubs being fed.

If you want to find out more about the work the charity does then there website is https://foxproject.org.uk/

Easter

We are really keen to ensure that the children have all the usual school experiences this term and this includes our celebration of Easter.

We are planning to hold an outdoor Easter Service outside in the last week of term (weather allowing) but, sadly, we will not be able to invite parents to join us at this time.

The children's team at All Saints Church are also helping us to organise an Easter Treasure Trail around our school grounds for each class to follow. This will involve scanning QR codes with our school tablet devices to open up video clues and challenges leading to them unlocking a virtual space where they find out about the real meaning of Easter.

Finally, we will be inviting children to take part in our Easter competitions, details given below. These competitions are completely optional.

Easter Competitions

Last year our Easter competitions had to be done remotely but this year we would love to have the children bring in their creations for us to see and judge during the last week of this term.

The details for the competition for each year group are shown below. We are planning to have an outdoor Easter bonnet parade at which the Year 2 children can show off their headgear. As this will be dependent on the weather we would like all competition entries to come into school on Monday 29th March and we will then hold the parade on whichever day has the best weather during that week. All entries will then be sent home.

The categories are -

Reception - Easter Basket.

Create an Easter basket using recycled materials and using some of the symbols of Easter that you have been learning about.

Year 1 - Easter Garden

An Easter garden is a traditional way of remembering what happened on Good Friday and usually includes a hill, as the bible says Jesus was crucified on a hilltop, three crosses, a stone to represent the stone across the entrance to the tomb. Some simple instructions for a garden are shown below.

This is the only exception to bringing entries into school. As Easter gardens are quite bulky to bring in we would like these to be created at home - perhaps as a plot in your garden or in a container on your patio - and then a photograph sent in for us to make a display in school. We will create a slide show of all the entries to share with all the children in school.

Year 2 - Easter Bonnets

An Easter bonnet is any new hat worn traditionally on Easter Sunday. It is the tail end of an English tradition of wearing new clothes for Easter and is in keeping with the spirit of renewal and redemption at this time of the year.

For our Easter bonnets, we would like you to take the theme of renewal further by reusing and recycling materials for your hat.

Help Needed

Last year we had a 'shelter' built next to the cross on the playground shed. The plan is for this to be an outside reflection area for the children to use. However, in order for this to happen, it needs decorating and furnishing with reflective thoughts and pictures. There is also space under the benches to store boxes  - for books/writing materials.

Would you, or someone you know, like to take this on as a project?  We have lots of ideas but no time to put them into practice. It would be good to get the children involved in creating but also in giving their thoughts and ideas so you would need to be happy to work with the children on this. We would be love to do this as a Summer term project so that children would be able to use it properly by the end of the summer term.

If you are interested in finding out more please email the school office.

NSPCC Number Day

Thank you to everyone who donated to the NSPCC Number Day Appeal back on 5th February. We now have a final total, including Gift Aid, of £319 which is amazing.

Scrumys Rugby

There are still spaces on the Scrumys after school club which runs on Monday for Year 1 and Thursday for Year 2. For details and to book please go to https://www.scrumys.com/products  find Marlow Infant School and pick the correct session for Year 1 or Year 2

Scrumys is all about having fun whilst developing physical and social skills.

Safety around school

It has been lovely to see all our families return to school this week but we would remind you that, even though school is open, we are still in a National lockdown and we would ask that you adhere to our COVID precautions

  • only one person to drop off and collect children
  • masks to be worn by all adults dropping off or picking up whilst on school grounds
  • maintain a social distance of 2m when queueing in school, please use the painted or sticker spots to ensure this
  • move away from school quickly and do not congregate in groups to chat

General Reminder on Uniform and items coming into school

Watches

In line with our policy on uniform the wearing of watched is discouraged unless your child can tell the time and then they should be discrete in style. If children wear watches to school they can be distracting and also should they be lost or damaged this can be very distressing.

Hair

We appreciate that many children have much longer hair than they usually would. If your child's hair is shoulder length or longer then it must be tied up for school. This applies to both boys and girls.

Hand Sanitiser

We have plenty of sanitiser in school and children are required and encouraged to use the sanitiser at regular intervals during the day including when using the toilet, before lunch and when coming into the classroom. Please do not send your child in with their own sanitiser in school bags or pockets.

Lost Property

We already have a few items of uniform in our Lost Property basket, please check that all items including hats and gloves are named clearly.

Wellingtons

If you have not already done so please send in a pair of named wellington boots in a carrier bag to be left in school for use on your child's outdoor learning day.

For Sale

We have a fairly large, very sturdy 3 drawer filing cabinet surplus to requirements in our school office. It measures 100cm wide by 52.5cm deep and 106.5cm high and is in natural oak finish. Each drawer has runners for two sets of suspension files side by side. The unit is 9 years old and was over £600 when new.

If anybody would like it for a home office then please contact the school office and we can discuss a suitable donation to school funds.

Sandygate Cookbook

The official Sandygate recipe book is now available to order on ParentPay for £8.

Featuring over 100 recipes ranging from quick and easy dinners to sensational cake bakes (and everything in between) all of these dishes are well-loved family favourites.  Featuring artwork from the children and contributions from both pupils and teachers we hope that this book will not only provide you with some culinary inspiration but will serve as a wonderful keepsake of your child’s time at the school or even as a gift for a grandparent.  Each book is A5 and ring bound and will feature a special ‘colouring page’ inside so your child can personalise their own copy.  The main cover artwork has been designed by local artist Bee Skelton.

Due to the bespoke nature of this fundraiser, we are only able to do a single print run of the books so there will be no further opportunity to order a copy. We ask that you take this into account when deciding how many you would like and place your order by Wednesday 17th March. Thank you!
