Hopefully you will have read the news article and seen that we are now a Gold: Rights Respecting school. The Rights Ambassadors told the rest of the children during celebration worship today and there were huge cheers from all the children. We are all so excited to be one of only 3 schools in Buckinghamshire to have achieved this award!
We mentioned last week in the Newsletter that each class were preparing their own class worship about one of the school values. I am pleased to say that the Year 2 children have completed theirs. Grasshopper class worship is about the value of Service and Dragonfly class worship is about the value of Respect. The video of each class worship is posted on the relevant class' home page on the school website for parents to log in and watch. The rest of the school will be watching the videos in class for the next 2 Tuesdays. The other year groups will be preparing their values over the coming weeks, and we will let you know when they are completed.
It is so pleasing to feel that we are slowly coming out of the Lockdown and as the restrictions are gradually released, please remember that we do still have a school Covid risk assessment in place and I would appreciate it if parents could be mindful of this, especially at drop off and pick up. We are working on a plan to gradually relax some of the restrictions that we have in school and this will be staged, ensuring that we are careful to not rush things. Our plans will of course be determined by Government Guidance and the confidence of staff and governors that the timing is right, and I will communicate with you giving plenty of notice of any changes that might be made. In the meantime, I would like to thank parents again for their continuing support through these difficult times.

Report from Rights Respecting School Ambassadors
We are very pleased to let you know that, following our recent 'virtual' accreditation visit, we have been awarded the UNICEF UK Gold Rights Respecting Schools Award. Our banner will soon be replaced with a new one to let everyone know that we have achieved the highest level of the award which recognises that we have fully embedded the principles of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child into our ethos and curriculum.
There are less than 500 schools in the country who have achieved Gold and only 2 others in Buckinghamshire.

Tarmac work in School
Thursday 6th & Friday 7th May
Please be aware that next Thursday and Friday we will have contractors in school to resurface part of the playground. In order to access the playground they are removing the side gate next to Teatimers and this will stay down throughout the two days.
In order to maintain the safety of the children we will be keeping all doors on that side of the school locked and it is very important that all visitors to school shut the main gates into school behind them during the school day. We will be monitoring this and it may be necessary to lock the pedestrian gate if it is left open.
For drop-off and pick-up parents should queue exactly as they normally do and Mr Creese and Miss Janes will be waiting near the gate to then take the children through the main entrance to school. Please bear with us over the two days as drop off and pick up may not go as smoothly as it usually does.

Pyjamarama Day for BookTrust
Friday 14th May
Pyjamarama
On Friday 14th May we will be celebrating Pyjamarama, BookTrust’s fundraising celebration aimed at getting more children reading.
During the day we will be celebrating many stories to get the children excited about the magic of books and stories, and to raise money for those children who don't have access to books at home. The children are invited on this day to come to school wearing pyjamas. Please ensure that their pyjamas are suited to the weather that day, and we would request that the children do not wear onesies.
Diana Gerald, Chief Executive of BookTrust said: “Sharing stories both at school and at home is a fantastic way to help children build social skills and resilience and supports communication skills, language development, confidence and mental health, which is even more important given the difficulties of the last year. At BookTrust we’re all too aware of the negative impact that the Covid-19 pandemic has had on children and families: our insight suggests that many are reading less and have struggled to access books. That’s why we’re asking children across the country, at school or at home to don their pyjamas on 14 May and donate £1 to BookTrust so that we can help all children have access to books and stories because reading really does change lives.”
About BookTrust
BookTrust is dedicated to getting children reading because we know that children who read are happier, healthier, more empathetic and more creative. Their early language development is supported, and they also do better at school.
We are the UK’s largest children’s reading charity; each year we reach 3.9 million children across the UK with books, resources and support to help develop a love of reading, because we know that reading can transform lives.

Funds raised from BookTrust’s Pyjamarama campaign could go towards:
- £25 could provide 15 pre-school children living in women’s refuge centres with their own book pack
- £50 could provide 6 families from deprived communities with additional support through their children’s centre to develop a reading habit
- £100 could help BookTrust work with a struggling secondary school to support teenagers re-engage with reading
- £1,000 could enable BookTrust to support 740 children with a disability that impacts motor skills, providing them with specially created touch and feel books, finger puppets and guidance for parents

Walk to School Week
17th-21st May
The Staff and Governors are excited to announce that Sandygate will be joining in with Living Streets Walk to School Week. This year the focus is Walking Superpowers, helping to learn how walking benefits us as individuals, our local community and the planet.
Walking has so many benefits from physical to mental wellbeing, helping concentration and creating less polluted more welcoming streets. There are five Superheroes that the children will learn about across the week that will teach them about these ideas.

Everyone will be encouraged to travel to school in a sustainable way (walk, scoot, cycle or Park and Stride). We recognise that it is not possible for everyone to be able to walk to school so we have included a map which shows 5 and 10 minutes walking zones to help with Park and Stride to school.

Space Competition
The children in Year 2 have been working on designs for a picture/logo to go on the outside of a space rocket which will launch in 2022. The rocket will be orbiting Jupiter and her moons.
There are some super prizes for winners and runners-up, and so we thought we would share it with everyone in case there are some artists out there in Year 1 and Reception who would also like to take part.
If your child would like to then you can find all the details here:

Lighthouse Marlow – 2-6 August 2021
We are pleased to be able to share with you that the Lighthouse Marlow children’s holiday week is going to run this summer! For those of you that do not know about Lighthouse, it is a week-long holiday club run by volunteers from churches in Marlow with crafts, bible stories, sports and lots of fun. It is funded by donations, and we do not charge for children to attend.
We were unable to run last year due to the COVID pandemic but this summer we are back to run Lighthouse in marquees on the field behind Holy Trinity School as usual, however the week will look a little different to normal. The range of activities the children do will be the same as usual, but they will be delivered differently to minimise risk to the children and our volunteer helpers.
As in every year, we need lots of volunteers to help run Lighthouse this year, and we are very keen to welcome new volunteers, both adults and young people aged 12 to 17. Most volunteers spend time with the children (age 5-11), some help supervise a small group of children, others help lead activities such as sport, craft and drama that the children do during the day. We also run a creche for pre-school children of helpers. However, if working with children is not your thing, we also need people to do administrative tasks, provide hot drinks to helpers, and set up and manage the site.
If you helped in 2019, or registered to help in 2020, you should have received an email with a link to register. If you would like to volunteer and have not helped before, please register here:
https://lighthousecentral.org/forms/leader-registration .
Children’s registration will open in May. We recognise that many people are unable to help unless their children get places at Lighthouse, hence we will try to provide places for your children if you volunteer for at least 2 days.
We need helpers in all areas – if you want to know more about the types of thing you could do take a look at https://lighthousecentral.org/lighthouses/marlow/roles .
If you have any questions then please contact us by email at marlow@lighthousecentral.org .
Hope to see you in the summer!
