In school this week

It has been wonderful to be back in school this week. I would like to thank everyone for such a warm welcome back and for the gifts that I was sent while I was not here.

This week has been Science Week in school and you will see from the News Story below that there have been a wide range of exciting activities for the children to take part in. Thank you to Mrs Browning for organising the week and to all the visitors that came in to share their science knowledge with the children.

The parent consultations this week provided you with the chance to find out about the progress that your child(ren) has(have) been making in school. I hope that you found these sessions useful.

The class home pages for this half-term are now published on the school website. The home pages give you an overview of the learning that will be taking place over the next few weeks.

Easter Service

On Tuesday 24th March from 9.45am-10.15am, we would like to invite all families to our Easter Service at All Saints Church.

We also need a number of parents to help walk to the church with the children. We will leave school at 9.15am and return by 10.45am. If you can help, please let us know below.

Hot Cross Buns

The children will receive a hot cross bun, following the Easter Service, to take home with them on Tuesday 24th March. We would like a couple of parents to help bag these up for us, either in the morning around 11am or in the afternoon around 2pm. If you are able to help, please let the office know.

Easter Competitions

  • All entries brought in: Tuesday 24th March and Wednesday 25th March

It's that time of year again for our annual Easter Competitions!

We would like the children to bring their entries into school on Tuesday 24th March and Wednesday 25th March so that we can judge them and award the winners on Thursday 26thMarch. Please don't bring them in before these dates as we don't have enough space to store them.

We are planning to have an Easter Hat parade on Thursday 26thMarch at which the Year 2 children can show off their Easter Hats to the rest of the school.

The details of the competition for each year's groups are shown below. The categories are:

Reception – Easter Basket

Create an Easter basket using recycled materials and using some of the symbols of Easter that you have been learning about.

Year 1 – Easter Garden

An Easter garden is a traditional way of remembering what happened on Good Friday and usually includes a hill. As the bible says, Jesus was crucified on a hilltop, three crosses, a stone to represent the stone across the entrance to the tomb. Some simple instructions for a garden are shown below.

Year 2 – Easter Hat

An Easter hat is any new hat worn traditionally on Easter Sunday. It is the tail end of an English tradition of wearing new clothes for Easter and is in keeping with the spirit of renewal and redemption at this time of the year.

For our Easter hats, we would like you to take the theme of renewal further by reusing and recycling materials for your hat.

World Down Syndrome Day

  • Date: Friday 20th March

We will be marking World Down Syndrome day in school on Friday 20th March. The children will be learning about Down Syndrome during school worship and on Friday 20th we are asking the children to come to school wearing bright, colourful socks that will get noticed. The idea is that people will ask them why they are wearing the socks, and they will be able to say 'I am wearing these socks to raise awareness for Down Syndrome!'

What is Down Syndrome?

  • Down syndrome occurs naturally – there is no known cause.
  • Down Syndrome (or Trisomy 21) is a condition in which a person has an extra chromosome.
  • Most people have 23 pairs of chromosomes – 46 in total. People with Down Syndrome have an extra chromosome added to the 21st pair – 47 in total.
  • Chromosomes act like an instruction manual that defines how our bodies look and how they work.
  • People who have Down Syndrome usually have an intellectual disability. This is different for each person.
  • Some health conditions are more common in people with Down Syndrome.
  • Around 1 in every 800 babies will be born with Down Syndrome.

Dressing up

As you may know, World Book Day is just around the corner. We are thrilled to celebrate this special day and encourage all children to join in the fun by dressing up as a character from a book they love.

Making the day meaningful

We kindly ask that children bring along a copy of the book featuring their chosen character, if possible. This will give them the chance to share the story behind their costume with their classmates.

Children will have the opportunity to:

  • Share who they’ve dressed up as and explain why they chose that character.
  • Show their book to a friend and discuss their favourite parts.

We hope this day sparks creativity, inspires a love of reading and brings stories to life in a fun and engaging way!

Thank you for your support, and we can’t wait to see the wonderful characters brought to life on World Book Day!

Just a reminder that on the day, children should wear their PE kit, but  suitable layers for the weather. They will need a pair of sensible outdoor shoes and a waterproof coat. Dependent on the weather, we will take wellies from school if required. All children will need a snack, a packed lunch (if not ordered), in a named box or bag.

Please can children bring a teddy bear from home for the day to enjoy a teddy bears picnic (Shhh...it's still a surprise!)?

Communication Week

As part of our Communication Week, we are delighted to invite grandparents into our Reception classrooms to share the joy of reading with the children. On Wednesday 4th March between 2.00 and 2.45, grandparents will have the opportunity to spend a short time in class enjoying books, stories and conversations with their grandchildren and their friends. Reading together supports children’s language development, listening skills and love of books, and we know how special it is for children to share this experience with family members. Grandparents are welcome to bring a favourite story to share, or they can choose from books provided by the school.

We hope you can join us to help make Communication Week a memorable and meaningful experience for our youngest learners.

If your child's grandparent can visit, please click here

More information can be found in the email along with how you can register for the online Parent Portal and opt-out if you do not wish for your child to be screened.

Unfortunately, we can only accommodate pupils who attend Marlow Infants to ensure everyone at the school can be included.

A massive thank you for saving our shed!

The PFA shed has suffered from a leak over the winter, damaging a few precious items inside, but thanks to the support of some wonderful Sandygate parents, we were able to fix this over the last week – thank you so much for the roof felt donations, and to Karl Lowe, one of our Reception parents, who took the time out of his week to fix the roof himself for us.

Without this generous effort, our shed wouldn’t have lasted much longer with the relentless rain we've been having, so we are hugely grateful. Our tombolas can once again live in peace without fear!

The PFA are on the hunt for gifts for our Easter Raffle baskets!
