10th October 2025

In school this week

Our Harvest Festival yesterday was incredible – the children sang so beautifully and the worship leaders excelled themselves. My thanks to Mrs Downing for leading the children in their singing! You can find out more and see some photos in the news story below.

Next week we are looking forward to welcoming Berkshire Reptile Encounters to school. They will be spending time with the Year 1 classes who will be learning more about (and handling) different reptiles as part of their science learning.

Recommended Reads – whole school

One area of focus in our reading curriculum is to promote the love of reading and there are many ways in which we do this in school. From reading class stories, to visiting the library in school to spending time reading and choosing books, modelling reading skills, discussing texts, to children sharing their love of reading through the recommending of books to their peers.

This week it was the turn of Butterfly Class who chose the book 'Alan's Big, Scary Teeth by Jarvis.

Regan and Gigi shared the book with the rest of the school in Celebration Worship this morning. They said that everyone in the class liked the book and would recommend it because it was funny and made them laugh out loud. Regan particularly liked the bit where Alan's false teeth fell out. Gigi liked thepart of the story where Barry the Beaver wore Alan's false teeth.

Volunteer training

  • Dates: Tuesday 14th October at 2.30pm & Thursday 16th October at 9.00pm

Thank you to those who have offered their help already. In the past, we have had family volunteers working on a variety of activities including listening to children read, mounting and displaying work and helping with sewing and craft activities – the possibilities are endless.

Mums, dads, carers and grandparents are all very welcome in school as helpers. The school operates a policy whereby parents need to attend a short training session before helping out in class.

So far, we have only had 8 people volunteer to be regular helpers in school and the training sessions that we are holding next week will be the only ones we are running this year.

Even if you have done the training before, you will still need to refresh it this year.

Our teachers rely on the help from the regular volunteers in school and are already planning the activities they need support with, in anticipation of having lots of helpers!

If you are interested in becoming a regular helper, please click here to read the Confidentiality Policy and here to read the Child Protection Policy. Then click here to complete the form.

Parent consultations

  • Dates: Tuesday 21st & Wednesday 22nd October, between 4pm-7pm

Parent consultation slots are still live

Thank you to all those parents and carers who have already booked their slot.

If you haven't yet booked a parent consultation, the booking system will be closing soon, so please log in to the school website as soon as possible to book your place.

Hiring the school hall

Did you know that our school facilities are available for hire in the evenings, at weekends and during the school holidays?

The school hall is particularly ideal for children's parties and is often available on Saturday and Sunday afternoons.

You can find out more here.

Reception News

Reception Natural Art

The Reception team are asking that, when you go out for a lovely walk this weekend, that the Reception children collect natural resources. These will be used for creating temporary art during the children's play learning time.

Please collect things such as:

Fir cones, Acorns, Pinecones, Leaves, Feathers, Coloured petals from the floor, Sticks, Pieces of fallen bark, Moss, Stones and pebbles, Shells and Bamboo circles.

Nursery Rhyme Day

  • Date: Friday 24th October

To celebrate their first half-term's work on the topic of Nursery Rhymes, Reception are planning a Nursery Rhyme Day on 24th October.

We would like to invite the children in Reception to come to school dressed as a nursery rhyme character. The costume does not need to be elaborate or shop bought, a simple homemade costume would be perfect.

If your child decides not to dress up, that is absolutely fine, school uniform will be expected instead.

Year 2 News

Remembrance Day

Next half-term, the Year 2 topic will be 'Lest We Forget' where the children will be learning all about the two World Wars,  the importance of Remembrance Day and the poppy as a symbol as a symbol of remembrance.

On Monday 10th November in the morning, both Year 2 classes will be spending the morning at All Saints Church learning about Remembrance. They will walk down to church and consent for this is covered by the Local Area consent that parents and carers gave when their children started school. In order to make the visit possible, however, we will need volunteers to walk to and from church with us and to support with the activities at All Saints.

We will leave school at 9.00am and return to school by 11.30am
