7th March 2025

In school this week

Yesterday, the amazing array of costumes that the children wore for World Book Day definitely made an impression, especially when I saw the children walking through the school gates and into the hall for school worship later in the morning. We are really thankful to the extent to which families enter into the spirit of the day - it made a huge contribution to its success. You can see some photos of the day below.

Next week is British Science Week and this year's theme is 'Change & Adapt'. Mrs Browning, our science lead, organised the week including  a special school worship on Monday morning and the visit of some parents and A-level science students from Borlase who are coming in to share their science knowledge with us throughout the week.

Also next week, Year 2 will have a local artist visiting to help them with their art lesson. This half term, they are learning how to sketch and Keith Clarke has sketched and painted many local landmarks, so we are very excited to welcome him.

General news & reminders

Whole school news

This week in School Worship

In School Worship (Collective Worship) this week, the focus has been on Lent. The children have learned about Shrove Tuesday and how it’s a day of preparation and feasting before the 40-day period of fasting and reflection leading up to Easter. Shrove means 'forgiveness of sins' and traditionally cupboards were emptied of all the tempting foods before fasting started.

The next day, the children learned about Ash Wednesday, which is the first day of Lent. Some Christians have special church services and palm crosses or leaves from the previous Palm Sunday are burnt and the ashes used to draw a cross symbol on the forehead of each attendee.

The 40-day period mentioned above is known as Lent and reminds Christians about the 40 days that Jesus spent in the wilderness before starting his ministry.

Lent, in the church calendar, is considered as a 'special time' and so the colour of the altar cloths are changed from green to purple for the new 'season'. In recognition of this, in school, the worship leaders changed the cloth that covers our table, as you see in the photos below. You can find out more information about collective worship in our school here and the seasons of the church year here.

The Path of Positivity project - REMINDER

  • Deadline: Monday 17th March

Today, we had a visit from the Deputy Mayor Cllr Colleen Stapley. During worship, she spoke to us about the project and gave us some inspiration.

If your child would like to submit a design, please bring it to school by Monday 17th March.

Mural designs must:

  • Use the provided colour palette (plus white and black)
  • Include a positive message that will inspire and uplift viewers
  • Feature a design that brings joy or encourages self-love and positivity

Our Art Councillors and Eco Warriors will select the most creative pieces to send to the council. Our school will receive a section of the wall, approximately three to four panels wide, to showcase our mural. The council aims to have all designs ready by the end of March, with painting taking place in April (weather permitting).
