18th October 2024

In school this week

We are already nearing the end of the half-term and next week the children will be busy finishing off the learning on their current topics. When I look back over the last 7 weeks, it is incredible how far the children have come in such a short period of time. The learning they have covered and the progress they have made is pleasing and to see them walk around school and access their learning environments with such confidence, you would think they had been in their new classes for much longer than a half-term!

Looking forward to next week, there are curriculum enrichment activities happening for all year groups: Berkshire Reptile Encounters on Tuesday for Year 1, Great Fire of London Day on Wednesday for Year 2 and Nursery Rhyme Day on Friday for Reception – another busy week in store!

We also have our parents' consultations next week, so it will be good to see many of you then.

General news & reminders

Recommended reads

Each week in Celebration worship this term, children share their favourite reads with the rest of the school. This week it was the turn of Butterfly class. Their favourite book is Chicken Clicking by Jeanne Willis & Tony Ross.

India said, 'I liked the part where the chicken crept past the sleeping cat'. Benjamin said, 'I liked it when the chicken had a diamond watch wrapped around her'. Lily said, 'I liked it when the chicken bought roller skates for the pigs and scooters for the sheep'. Lowen said, 'I liked it when the fox played a nasty trick on the chicken, he pretended to be a friendly chicken but when chicken got there, he was a fox!' Autumn said, 'This book will be in the library for everyone to read. We hope you enjoy it!'

Arriving & leaving school

We encourage families to walk to school wherever possible, but if you do drive, we would ask that you park considerately, ensuring you are not blocking private driveways, bays or pavements. Doing so can mean that pedestrians cannot pass or access for emergency vehicles and others is blocked.

The spaces in front of Gweneth Court are strictly for residents. We would ask that you respect our neighbours when parking and not use their parking bays or block them even if you are sitting in the car waiting. We have had several complaints from the residents and some find the situation particularly upsetting.

We would also like to remind parents and carers about the need to observe the parking restrictions on the zig-zag markings outside the school gate. There is no parking on the zig-zag markings between 8am–9.30am or between 3pm–4pm. These restrictions are here for several reasons and the main one is for the safety of the children.

There is parking available to the rear of Gweneth Court. This can be found by following the road around to the left as you drive towards the
school.

Labelling snacks

We would like to remind parents to label their children's fruit snack please.

Snacks are eaten by children in the middle of the school morning. Children can bring in fruit or vegetables for their snack in a named reusable container. If you send in grapes, please make sure that they are cut in half.

At snack time, we do not allow nuts, chocolate, sweets or pre-packed fruit snacks such as Yoyos .

Parent consultations – what to expect

As you know, after half-term, we are holding our parents' consultations.

This will be your opportunity to have a 10-minute chat with your child's class teacher about how your child has settled into their new class and hear about the progress they are making. The class teacher will also share a progress report with you and discuss what your child needs to work on next.

We will be putting out children's books for their parents and carers to look at. You might want to arrive 5 minutes early to allow you the time to browse. We thought it would be useful to explain a little bit about how we give the children written feedback on the work that they complete in the books. This is slightly different in Reception when compared to Year 1 & 2. We want the children to be able to understand the feedback, so we use a series of symbols that we teach the children to recognise and understand. A summary of the symbols can be found on the inside covers of the exercise books, and you can find them in the appendices of our Feedback policy, which you can access here.

Teachers also use initials, for example, to indicate when the children have been working on greater depth challenges in Maths (GD).

'Book Looks' for Parents & Carers

Following feedback in the parent survey last year, we have introduced additional opportunities for parents and carers to come and look at their children's books at different points over the year.

As you will have read above, you will get the first opportunity to do this at the parent consultations next week (we haven't put them out at the October consultations in the past).

The other opportunities will be on the following dates:

Autumn 2

Thursday 5th December 3.30-4.00pm

Spring 1

Tuesday 28th January 3.30-4.00pm

Spring 2

26th & 27th February (Parent Consultations)

Summer 1

Thursday 1st May 3.30-4.00pm

Summer 2

Wednesday 2nd July

More details will be given as we approach each of the dates above.

Lunchtime at Marlow Infants

As you are aware, we have a new lunch supplier this year. At the moment we are only offering a cold buffet type lunch. It is our aim to source hot meals again as soon as we can. We took the decision to ensure a quality cold option in the summer term when our existing hot lunch supplier closed their local hub. At the time, there were no other hot lunch suppliers that had the capacity to provide the 22 schools that found themselves in the same situation as us.

The cold buffet that is provided by the Kids Lunch company, provides children with a range of options to choose from and these can vary from day to day. There is a good balance of food types, including (but not exclusively) fresh fruit, vegetables, cheese and yoghurts. Sandwiches are made mostly with 50/50 bread or bread rolls. Again, there is a range of fillings for the children to choose from.

Our school councillors have made a mini-video about the school lunches at Marlow Infants. We have uploaded the video to our school website.

Tissues

We would be most grateful for donations of tissue boxes from parents please. We are very low, especially in Year 1. Thank you in advance.

MDSA vacancy

We currently have a Midday Supervising Assistant (MDSA) vacancy. We are looking to appoint a responsible and enthusiastic individual who will ensure the safety, welfare and good conduct of the children during the lunchtime period. You will be part of a friendly and supportive team working with happy and friendly children.

The full job description and details of how to apply can be found on the school website here.

Video call to Kenya – Year 1

For several years, we have had a link with the Bright Future Academy, which is in the town of Oyugis in Kenya. In the past, children in both Year 1 and 2 have written and received letters from the children attending the school. In the summer term last year, we were able to establish a video link with the school and this morning, children in Butterfly Class were able to see and speak to pupils at Bright Future. The connection is not always reliable, but today was a huge success for Butterflies!

Nursery Rhyme Day

  • Date: Friday 25th October

To celebrate their first half-term's work on the topic of Nursery Rhymes, Reception are planning a Nursery Rhyme Day on 25th October.

We would like to invite the children in Reception to come to school dressed as a nursery rhyme character. The costume does not need to be elaborate or shop bought, a simple home-made costume would be perfect.

If your child decides not to dress up, that is absolutely fine, school uniform will be expected instead.

Small cardboard items

Next week, please could Reception children bring in small cardboard items to be used for their junk modelling projects, i.e. egg boxes, toothpaste boxes. Please remember not to bring in any items that may have contained nuts.

Silent auction

We are currently working hard to put together an incredible silent auction. Hopefully you will all be able to find something to bid on to help with your Christmas shopping! Thanks to the generosity of our Sandygate parents, we already have some impressive offerings. But we would be really grateful if you or your business/employer could help donate a prize. It could be for a physical gift, an experience, tickets to an event, a voucher or service. No prize is too big or too small. The more prizes we can get the better!

The benefit to you/your business is through people accessing the online silent auction website and the extra advertising and business this may lead to. The auction tends to go beyond the reach of just our school community as we share the link on the Marlow Facebook groups.

If you have any prize you can donate, please either let your year reps know, or you can contact Cori on pfa@marlow-infant.bucks.sch.uk

Thank you so much, we really appreciate all the help you are giving us!
