13th September 2024

In school this week

Our first full week of the school year is now complete, and I am thrilled to see how well the children have settled into the routines in their new classes. The Reception children, particularly, have taken to school life brilliantly. Of course, everyone is tired now, but thankfully, there is the opportunity to rest over the weekend.

On Tuesday, we held 'Meet the Teacher' for Y1 & Y2. I would like to say thank you to the teachers for staying late to put on the event and those parents who came along to learn about what will be going on in school and their child's class this year. Unfortunately, we had to postpone the 'Meet the Teacher' for Grasshopper class. Parents & carers of Grasshopper class can find details of the rearranged time below; we look forward to seeing you then. For those who were unable to make it, the presentations that the teachers used during 'Meet the Teacher' are on the class home pages.

Our new lunch system has taken a bit of getting used to for the adults, but things are now going smoothly. I have been speaking to the children about their lunches and they are loving them!

Sandygate Star & Value Award

Each week in our celebration assembly we give out awards to children in school: Sandygate Star and Value Award. The Sandygate Star Award is awarded to one child in each class. These are given by the class teachers for individual achievements across all areas of school life.

Our Value Award is linked to the school values which are Service, Respect, Kindness, Perseverance, Forgiveness and Thankfulness.

Each half-term we will link school worship and the value award to one of the values.  There will be a series of themes which help the children understand what the value is and these will be the focus of each week’s award.

Each week teacher’s will choose someone from their class who has demonstrated the relevant value during the week. Each child will be given a leaf or flower shaped certificate and a sticker. The certificates will be attached to the Values tree in the hall and children will take home their sticker.

Habits of Mind Award

This term we have launched a new award which links to a 'Habit of Mind'. A 'Habit of Mind' is how we use what we have learnt to decide the best way to do something, choosing behaviours that will help us learn and be positive. This is part of our metacognition work and the children will be learning about one Habit of Mind every half-term. Mrs Reynolds will be giving a certificate to one child from each class every week in celebration worship for children who are using the Habit of Mind in focus.

Whole school news

Individual school photos

Our school photographer, Kate McNeil, was in school yesterday taking individual photographs of all the pupils. She also took group photos of any siblings in school. Your child will have brought home a QR code for parents/carers to register to see their images and make their order online.

Home learning

KS1

KS1 home learning will go live every Friday on each class' Google Classroom, starting today. Please contact the office if you have misplaced your login or are having trouble logging in.

Information about the home learning policy and a copy of the policy is on the class home page.

Reception

Home learning will start next week.

Values home learning

This will be set once a half-term by Mrs Reynolds, and this is also loaded onto Google Classrooms. This half-term the value in focus is kindness and the home learning involves parents/carers having discussions with their children about the value as well as activities to support children's understanding of kindness. There is also a 'craft activity' for children to complete and bring into school to share. We will put all of their contributions on display in the school hall.

Class home pages

These are now all published on the school website. Class home pages provide an overview of what the children will be learning this half-term, a class timetable for the half-term and the Meet the Teacher presentations (for the three KS1 Meet the Teacher events that have already taken place).

Pick up & drop off

Please remember that children (and adults) should not be riding scooters or bikes on school grounds - please make sure that bikes and scooters are pushed until they are outside the main gates.

When on school grounds, children should be supervised by their adults at all times until they are handed over to school staff. Please do not allow children to run around at the front of school or on the field.

PFA Circus MUFTI Day

In order to celebrate the arrival of the circus at Marlow Infants, we will be holding a special MUFTI day on Friday 20th September. A MUFTI day is a non uniform day and the theme for this day is brightly coloured clothing.

All children can come into school wearing brightly coloured clothing (but no football kits) on the 20th September instead of their school uniform in return for a donation of an item for the adult and/or children's tombola which will be held at the circus.

Sandygate Sunday

  • Date: Sunday 29th September 11.00am-12 noon

Once a term, we are invited to take part in the 10.59 service at All Saints Church. Some of our pupils will read prayers they have written, and we lead the congregation in one of the songs we sing in school.

All Sandygate families are welcome to come along to the service. We ask that children wear their red jumpers/cardigans to identify them as Marlow Infant pupils. They should sit with their family during the service and the school staff in church will invite them up at the appropriate times.

New pupil logins

School website

Those families who are new to our school will have received an email this week with login details for our school website.

Please follow the instructions to activate your account as soon as possible, as the link expires after about a week. You will need to use this logon to access your child's Class home pages – these are live now and will have information on what the children will be learning this term, links to resources and information on special days they may be having.

The login will also be needed for booking Parent Consultations later in the year.

School app

We would encourage you all to download the school app called 'School News', as this will notify you of news items as they are posted on our website and also gives you access to the school calendar to check events. Over the coming months, this app should also allow you to book parents' evenings. Details on how to download the app are on the school website here.

Google Classroom, ParentPay & Purple Mash

All parents of new pupils to our school would have received instructions today on how to activate their Google Classroom and ParentPay accounts. You also have received login details for Purple Mash (label inside every child's reading record). Please keep these logins safe.

Purple Mash is used in school to support the teaching of computing as well as in other ways across the curriculum. You can use this platform at home with your child. It provides lots of activities that will support their learning.

Reading books

All children in KS1 have been reading 1:1 with their class teacher this week. This helps the teachers have a good idea of the reading skills of each child. Last Monday, the children in KS1 brought home a reading book to read at home. They should have also brought home their reading record book. This will be sent home daily to record any reading which you do at home with your child. We will also record any reading sessions that take place in school.

As part of the 1:1 reads, which will continue for the next few weeks, the teachers will be assessing the children's reading. This will mean there may be some changes to the colour band that your child(ren) are reading.

Children in Year 1 will have brought home a phonics reader today and this will continue every Friday. The folder and book will need to be returned every Thursday, so that the reader can be changed. Some children in Year 2 will also be bringing home a phonics reader.

As a school we take caring for the environment very seriously. As part of this is helping the children develop their understanding of how plants, fruit and vegetables grow. The school eco-warriors came up with the idea of the school having its own mini orchard. With this in mind, we are hoping to raise the funds needed. As part of Tesco Stronger starts, you will see our project in their local stores.

Please use the blue tokens to vote for us and will, hopefully, win some of the money that will pay for the mini-orchard.

The Tesco stores where you will be able to vote for us are:
