Switch Off Fortnight

Our Eco-warriors led School Worship on Monday morning to tell us all about Switch Off Fortnight

They asked us all to think about what we use electricity for at home and in school for things like lights, heating, cooking, watching tv and many other activities. Whilst we don't have to stop using electricity completely we can all be a bit smarter about how we use energy and not waste it.

What can we do to stop wasting energy?

If you're feeling cold, don't rush to turn up the heating. What could you do instead?

  • Put on a jumper
  • Close any open windows and doors.

You don't have to live in constant darkness to save energy. What could you do instead?

  • Turn off the lights when you leave a room
  • Make sure nobody else has left the lights on in an empty room
  • Use energy efficient lightbulbs

Other things we can do are to not leave appliances in standby. A TV and games console left on standby all the time can use up to £80 of electricity a year. And don't leave mobile phones on charge all the time - even when it reaches 100% it still uses power so once it's charged switch it off at the plug.
