Our aim is to provide a caring, happy, purposeful and challenging environment in which children can feel secure and confident.
In Foundation Stage (Reception Class) we follow the EYFS (Early Years and Foundation Stage) Curriculum. Learning takes place through structured play and through the provision of a wide range of planned experiences, helping children to develop their independence and social skills as sound foundations for their lifelong learning.
Key Stage One covers Years 1 and 2 (children aged 5 to 7). Year 1 is a time of transition and the 'Transition Curriculum' is carefully planned to help children move from the Foundation Stage curriculum to the National Curriculum. The children continue to learn through structured learning activities, with more 'formal' literacy and numeracy sessions gradually introduced. At the end of Year 2 our pupils undertake the Key Stage 1 national assessment tasks or tests (SATs) which all 7 year old children take.
At Marlow CE Infant School we provide a broad and balanced curriculum that promotes spiritual, moral, social and cultural development in school and in society. We follow the National Curriculum but develop cross curricular programmes of study, making learning meaningful and relevant to the pupils. Personal, social, health and economic (PSHE) education is an important part of our school curriculum. PSHE is taught throughout the topics and also in separate lessons.
We aim to prepare pupils for the opportunities and responsibilities they will meet on their journey through education and beyond. We believe both learning and teaching should contribute, inspiring a love of life and equipping children to live it to the full. We want to give young minds time to reflect in awe and wonder on their world.
We believe in the importance of helping pupils to achieve their best. Lessons throughout the school are filled with energy, enthusiasm and knowledge. We use a range of approaches to teaching including a mixture of whole class and small group teaching. Phonics is taught in small focused groups regularly each day. Pupils are involved in setting their own targets to help embed basic skills and each lesson has a clear list of success criteria to help pupils know how to master the set objective.
We have a range of enrichment experiences for the children including visitors to school and excursions that support the topic of the term.
Our aim is to set children on the road to lifelong learning. We have careful assessments and tracking of children’s achievements to ensure that all pupils are making good progress and identify where alternative or supportive measures are needed.
Parents receive regular year group newsletters each term outlining the topic and areas to be covered so they can support their child at home.
Our English curriculum begins with the development of children's speaking and listening skills and includes reading, writing, spelling and handwriting.
We prioritise phonics as the first method of teaching reading although we include a wider range of techniques as children's skills develop. Jolly Phonics is the scheme used in Reception at Sandygate and Letters and Sounds is used in KS1 as the basis of phonics teaching. However we supplement the programme with additional material to strengthen our phonics curriculum. Basic skills of spelling, handwriting, grammar, features of different text types and comprehension are taught in specific lessons and then applied across the rest of the curriculum.
Our Reading books are from a range of schemes and are sorted into bands to ensure that the children are reading books at the right level.
We aim for children to be independent writers. We encourage them to write clearly and with confidence. We teach children to use punctuation and grammar accurately. We give children a wide range of opportunities in which to develop their writing skills and display work of which they are proud.
Through our English curriculum, we aim to nurture in the children a love of literature and language, and the confidence to continue reading and writing throughout their lives.
Maths is taught in separate lessons and then applied in other subject areas through our termly topics (for example weighing ingredients in cookery or using tally charts to organise information). We encourage children to develop good mental mathematics skills as well as learning different written methods of calculation. An important aspect of this subject is developing skills of problem solving, investigation and how to apply their knowledge to real life situations. Planning for the teaching of mathematics is driven by the on-going assessment of children and supported by the Abacus Maths scheme. Teachers use National Curriculum guidance to inform the content of their teaching.
We teach technology skills using ICT across the curriculum to enhance learning, children use laptops, learnpads, digital cameras, microphones and programmable toys. Children have access to ICT whenever and wherever it is beneficial to learning.
We aim to keep up with technology and have a programme in place that endeavours to update our equipment in line with curriculum expectations.
Learning within Religious Education lessons is an extremely important part of children’s Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural Development. We follow the Buckinghamshire Agreed Syllabus in RE. RE is taught in discrete lessons. In Key Stage 1 the main faiths studied are Christianity and Judaism. The pupils learn about different beliefs about God and the world around them. We enhance RE lessons with visits to local places of worship. In Reception class there are specific planned activities and unplanned opportunities within the EYFS curriculum for developing pupil’s knowledge and understanding of religious beliefs.
Physical Education is an extremely important part of our curriculum. We have specialist teachers come in to deliver a range of PE and work alongside the class teachers. The school holds an annual sports day in the summer term where the children compete in teams.
We follow the National Curriculum in Science. Science is taught as an individual subject but it is also taught throughout the topic when it is appropriate.
Topic Based Subjects
History, Geography, Art, Music and Design Technology are taught as part of the theme each term. Not every subject is covered each term but the children have a balance of the subjects throughout the year.
